It is no secret that libraries have always been crucial to a
student’s success, but just how important are they in today’s elementary schools,
especially as they adopt the Common Core Standards? Although I myself finished school
before the common core standards (and have little knowledge about common core
as a whole) were adopted and put into practice, I do believe (especially after
reading this article) that libraries are more important than ever in helping
teachers, parents and students connect the common core practices to the real
world that waits beyond the classroom. By making sure that your library
(whether it is a public or school library) has the necessary materials,
students are more likely to succeed and connect with the outside world. For
example, in the article “Why Are Libraries Critical for Common Core Success?”
author Kevin E. Baird gives numerous examples in the ways in which libraries
can support these standards, almost all of them being fairly simply to set up
and maintain. My favorite and the most interesting being creating a writing
center for kids to help them obtain support for writing, speaking, media skills
or even web programming. And while the set up would be different in a school
and public library, I believe that either way it is extremely important to have
these services. The way of public education is changing and no matter what
stance we take personally, it is important for us as professionals to be
supportive for the children and the ultimate goal of furthering their
education.
Bonus Item: While trying to obtain the full text on another
article, I came upon this manual from the ALA’s website titled “Implementing
the Common Core State Standards.” If you would like to read it, I have provided
the link; it is a very interesting read!
